Hotel Check
Trump SoHo New York
by Faith Zuckerman

WHAT'S IT LIKE? Located on the western edge of SoHo, the Trump SoHo New York hotel opened in April, rising high against the backdrop of the neighborhood’s historic cast-iron buildings. The first Trump hotel in downtown Manhattan, the building is modern, stylish and offers sweeping views of the Hudson River, the Statue of Liberty and the city itself.

WHERE IS IT? At the corner of Spring and Varick streets, the hotel is a short walk to the heart of SoHo, Greenwich Village and TriBeCa, with subway and taxi transportation easily accessible. Once primarily a neighborhood of art galleries, SoHo now also boasts world-class shopping and dining on its quaint cobblestone streets. Proximity to the Holland Tunnel, West Side Highway and subway make for effortless travel to and from New York’s three airports.

HOW MANY ROOMS? There are 391 guest rooms, including 132 one-bedroom suites, and three luxury spa suites. Ten penthouse suites, from 1,194 to 2,331 square feet, will open this summer. Many suites can be combined with adjacent guest rooms to create two-bedroom suites.

ROOM FACILITIES My spacious one-bedroom suite was comfortably appointed, with a contemporary style and a soothing color palette. Floor-to-ceiling windows allowed for jaw-dropping views and plenty of sunshine, although locating the light switches (even on some of the lamps) was a bit of a challenge, necessitating a call to the front desk for guidance. All rooms have high-speed Wi-Fi for $14.95 per day (it’s free in the lobby), flat-screen HDTVs, iPod docking stations, dual-line telephones, well-stocked mini bars, large desks and chairs, plus a Nespresso coffee maker that delivers complimentary java as creamy as can be. Room service is available 24 hours.

The stunning bathroom had subtle tones of cream and tan Italian marble, with a rain shower head, deep soaking tub and TV. The floor-to-ceiling window in the bathroom presented breathtaking views, which guests could enjoy while soaking in the tub, with electric window shades for the modest.

RESTAURANTS AND BARS Quattro Gastronomia Italiana specializes in Northern Italian cuisine, with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients, including homemade pasta, creamy burrata fresca, veal osso buco, roasted rabbit, crisp salads and a variety of seafood. The wine selection is world-class and ample. Quattro serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, and brunch on Saturday and Sunday. Kastel cocktail lounge has a nightly DJ, specializes in signature cocktails and is open from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m., with a door policy after 10 p.m. Rooftop and poolside Bar d’Eau is slated to open this summer.

BUSINESS FACILITIES A full-service business center with computers is available, while guests who want to work in privacy can rent a hotel computer for in-room use. There is 12,000 square feet of meeting space, including the Trump Executive Boardroom (which might tempt some to channel their inner Donald and shout, “You’re Fired!”), the TriBeCa meeting room, and the SoHo and Hudson Square ballrooms, which can be combined to handle more than 200 guests. SoHi, a 1,700-square-foot private space on the 46th floor, offers unobstructed views on three sides, truly putting guests on top of SoHo. The meeting and event rooms have high-speed and wireless Internet throughout, natural lighting, full catering from Quattro restaurant, and audio-video services on site.

LEISURE FACILITIES The Spa at Trump will open in early summer and feature unique Turkish hammams and classic spa treatments, with an emphasis on wellness. SoHo’s world-class shopping and restaurants are easily within walking distance from the hotel, and the High Line, a promenade built on a former elevated railroad, is about a mile away.

VERDICT The Trump SoHo New York is conveniently located on the edge of the landmarked SoHo neighborhood, and rooms are comfortable and well suited for both leisure and business travelers. Restaurant Quattro is a casually elegant and modern choice for those who prefer to dine at the hotel, and staff were welcoming, helpful, friendly and efficient.

PRICE Rates start at $299 for a King Deluxe room to $699 for a Superior one-bedroom suite.
