Wireless motion sensors that regulate energy use based on the presence of hotel guests; green roofs covered with drought-resistant plants; organic mattresses; recycling de-icing fluids; testing new biofuels: These are just a few of the initiatives being undertaken and innovations that have been developed to lessen travel’s footprint on the planet.

In this issue’s cover story, “Going Green,” starting on page 46, Janet Forman reports on what hotels, airlines, airports and car rental companies are doing to save fuel, recycle, cut costs and reduce their impact on the environment.

Also in this issue, Sallie Brady presents a roundup of emerging and booming business destinations, from Hyderabad to Hangzhou. Washington, D.C. resident Andrew Evans checks out some of the hot new hotels and restaurants bolstering the capital’s new cachet, and Mark Chesnut examines the underpinnings of San Juan’s economic surge and strength.

Heading east, Janet Forman tours Tokyo, from tuna auctions to upstart boutiques. And blissfully free of guidebooks, tour guides and an itinerary, Business Traveler’s Kate Briquelet finds her way around London’s markets, galleries, shops and cafés.
