Deborah Calmeyer's childhood was a walk on the wild side: her trajectory as a female CEO not without its hurdles. It is little wonder that she projects such seemingly unstoppable determination and confidence today.
Born and raised on a farm in the former Rhodesia, she grew up toward the end of the country's Bush War, or Zimbabwe War of Liberation, that lasted from 1964 to 1979. Tanks rolled past the family home, which was fortified by sandbags, taped windows and an alarm system; out in the bush, soldiers lived in towering hollowed-out anthills, surviving on rats; fearful of ambush and kidnap, Calmeyer slept on a knife edge.
